PTSC (Portland Telecommunications Steering Committee) is tasked with defining the requirements for a city-wide wireless network.

This wireless cloud will provide an alternative and competitive route to the Internet for City and State employees, local businesses as well as the general public.

It will also provide 24/7 wireless access to vital City web-based resources such as schools, colleges and health centers, hopefully at zero cost to users.

The network will be financed, built and managed by private industry.  No tax payer funds will be sought.

The Technologies used will include Wi-Fi and hopefully WiMAX.

Intel Consulting Services have been assisting in the process and an RFP is in development and close to completion.

The Portland Unwired initiative has the full backing of Mayor Tom Potter.

The Core Team Directors are:

Rashid Ahmed - Portland Development Commission
Nigel Ballard - Director of Wireless Matrix Networks
Rob Bole - One Economy
Roger Jones - Portland Neighborhood Business Association
Matthew Lampe - CTO City of Portland
Steve Robinson - CTO Portland Schools
Marshall Runkel - Assistant to City Commissioner Sten
Ron White - Network Communications Manager Tri-Met

CNET has a national municipal broadband plan
